5-Day Animal Modelling Course –
I’m sorry to say that my 5-day courses are currently fully booked. As I only take four people at a time, my waiting list has gradually built up and I’m trying to work my way through it before opening the courses up more widely.
I’m running the course five times in 2027, but unfortunately all of those places have now been taken.
I am, however, starting to take names for 2028, so if you’re interested in joining me (and you’re not a professional), please feel free to email me and I’ll add you to the waiting list.
I’m sorry I can’t offer anything sooner, but with only four people on each course and the amount of space needed for making and firing the work, there is a limit to how many courses I can physically fit in — I simply run out of room!
About the Course
The course is limited to just four people at a time — occasionally five, but only for group bookings where everyone knows each other. Keeping the groups small means I can give everyone plenty of individual help and tuition throughout the week.
You will learn how to make medium-sized animals, up to around 50cm high, using coiling and other hand-building techniques.
The focus is on capturing the character of the animal, rather than creating a precise or factual replica. We’ll explore various ways of achieving this, including using different tools and techniques to create surface textures and finishes.
While much of my own work centres around farm animals such as pigs, chickens and sheep, you’re very welcome to choose your own animal or design — almost anything, really. With a bit of discussion beforehand, I’ll be happy to help you work out what’s possible, as the same basic techniques still apply.
Materials & Firing
All clay and biscuit firing costs are included in the course price.
You’ll be working with:
* ES300 paper clay
* ES20 white stoneware
Food & Drink
I’m not able to provide lunch, but there’s a fridge, microwave and kettle in the workshop if you’d like to bring your own food.
I’ll provide tea, coffee, cold drinks, biscuits — and maybe some cake, if my mum’s around.
For everyone – Making animals using techniques based on my own work
The course is suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience in clay modelling. You will be taught how to build animals from the legs up, including suitable plinths or bases if required. As well as the techniques involved in modelling animals, you will develop an appreciation of the medium, including the timing of the different stages of construction and when to stop!
Students should bring plenty of source material including photographs, drawings, small models and even plastic toy farm animals. These will be very important to work from throughout the course.
Each student should complete at least one animal, and most can expect to finish two or more, depending on size. All the clay used, and the biscuit firing is included in the price

Excellent five days – Following Jon’s normal format of you make one animal following his lead and another from your own creation, having fist created a maquette. Jon instruction is brilliant and he has lots of patience with those learning. Ended up with two sculptures that I am very proud of. In fact all three attendees, produce what to me were amazing results. Have booked to come back again in December 2021.
